Today, MBUSD offers specialized music education taught by certificated teachers to all students from first through twelfth grade. It is one of only a few dozen districts where every elementary student receives instrumental music instruction.
The Music Program includes over 1,750 musicians playing in 30+ ensembles across Elementary and Secondary Levels as well as over 650 students in General Music in Elementary and Music Theory at High School.
The mission of the MBUSD Music Department is to ensure that students:
The current Grades 3-12 music curriculum is demanding, comprehensive through the levels, and grounded in the values and philosophies of excellence that have been established by the National Standards for Music Education.
Authentic assessments are used regularly to verify student learning, and substantiate the curriculum’s value by gauging its ability to address the dynamic needs of the student population in Manhattan Beach.
Through participation in music, students will build their sense of self worth, acquire essential life skills and habits, as well as understand the importance of collaboration and community outreach.
As students move beyond us, they will continue to enjoy and appreciate the aesthetic value of music by becoming lifelong learners in the field, and by contributing to the global community in an artistic and sensitive way.
All students learn to play the Violin as part of the 3rd Grade Wheel and then can choose to continue with a string instrument (Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass) in Grades 4-12
All students learn to play the Recorder as part of the 3rd Grade Wheel and then can choose to continue with a wind, brass or percussion instrument in Grades 4-12
All students learn to sing in a choir as part of the 3rd Grade Wheel and then can choose to continue with Choral Music in Grades 4-12
Two of our very own amazing, music educators were honored recently at the SCSBOA Conference.
Denise Haslop, Director of Instrumental Music at MBMS, received the Distinguished Member Award and Peter Park, the Orchestra Director at Mira Costa, received the Gold Award of Recognition!
The awards are for outstanding achievement in the field of music education and dedicated service to the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) through meaningful contributions to the organization and its members.
