We are a Music Coalition of Manhattan Beach parents, community members and advocates who strongly support the current Music Program in MBUSD and want to see it continue to flourish and grow for current and future generations of students.
The MBSUD School Board has approved cuts in the funding of the District Music Programs of around $215,000 or ~ 22% of what the District/MBEF directly funds. These cuts will have a severe impact on the ability of the Music Program to continue at its current level of excellence and threatens its very survival.
The MBUSD music program has a reputation as one of the premier school programs in California and even the nation.
The program – encompassing numerous bands, choirs and orchestras for students in Grades 4-12 – stresses music education through performance and provides a breadth of opportunity to perform at the highest level of excellence culminating in the GRAMMY™ Award-winning Music Department at Mira Costa High School.
All of the music ensembles have been hailed by professional critics and adjudicators alike for their fantastic performances and advanced repertoire. In recent years, the District bands, choirs and orchestras have presented numerous times at All-Southern California Music Conferences and Festivals.
In addition, they have entertained crowds of thousands at concert venues and events locally in the South Bay and around the state, as well as being invited to perform in world-class concert halls like Walt Disney Concert Hall here in Los Angeles, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Beijing Concert Hall, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice and other internationally-renowned venues in Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.
Due to the level of training, rehearsals, performance and professionalism taught to the students over the years in bands, choirs and orchestras, many have gone on to play in prestigious college music programs either as a career or to continue as a hobby. MBMS and Mira Costa musicians also tend to be over-represented in various school, state and national academic competitions and awards like National Merit Scholarships, Scholar Quiz and the Principal's Award.
